Androids are generally hard on battery. They drink the juice pretty fast. But, is using a task killer a great idea to save the juice? Guess what people you’re wrong! I was forced to write this as a lot of people actively use task killers and believe it helps them by a lot. In android, as soon as you get out of an app, it’s cached and is no more running except for some core apps. It just stays in the RAM in a paused state so that it can be opened without any glitch the next time and also by saving battery.

The designers intentionally left out a task killer and ways to close apps. Android, like many other operating systems built from Unix roots, all share one common thing about RAM; Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

Thus, killing apps (or telling Android to kill apps more aggressively with the “auto kill” feature) is generally unnecessary. Furthermore, it’s actually possible that this will worsen your phone’s performance and battery life. In fact, some of the processes related to those apps will actually start right back up, further draining your CPU. That said, not all apps are created equal. Many of you have used task killers in the past and actually found that after freeing up memory, your phone works a bit well. It’s more likely you’ve killed a bad app or an app that was poorly coded. Instead of killing all those apps again and again, find out which ones are actually causing the problem. If you really know what you’re doing, you may benefit from using a task killer to stop the one or two inefficient-but-loved apps on your phone.

“Cyanogen will not even look at your bug reports if you’re using a task killer!”

“Task killers make my battery last longer” – FALSE

Task killers actually do the opposite, they make your battery life shorter! Let’s look at what exactly you are doing when you kill a task. You are completely removing it from memory. Ok, so compared to leaving it in memory you are expecting to save battery? No, whether or not that bit of memory is used by an app or is free, the same amount of battery is going to be used. You are actually reducing battery life because when you next go to use that app, you have to fully reopen it, this uses more memory than simply bringing it out of memory.

“Task killers make my phone run faster” – FALSE

Task killers cause your phone to become unstable and jerky. Killing processes is bad because a process may be shared between applications. When you kill it, you are causing disruption within the OS, forcing apps to reopen, to reopen a shared process.

“There is no exit button, that’s why I use a task killer” – FALSE

There is no exit button because android was designed to never have the need for a user to close apps. If an app needs closing, android will do this itself.

THEN WHAT THE HECK SHOULD I DO??

Use watchdog

Watchdog is a slightly different kind of task killer, in the sense that instead of telling you your phone’s out of memory and it’s time to go on a task killing spree, it alerts you when the occasional app starts eating up CPU for no reason. You can then kill the app with Watchdog and get on with your day.

Uninstall Bad Apps
Worse than the occasional, one-time runaway app is the poorly coded, always-eating-CPU app. If you find (with Watchdog or through some other method) that a particular app seems to drain CPU and battery life whenever it’s running, confirm your suspicions by uninstalling it and seeing what happens. If an app is causing problems on your phone, you’re probably better off without it.

Root Your Phone
If you want to unlock the true potential of your device, root it. Most of the bricking can be recovered by flashing the stock firmware. The permanent bricking happens so rarely, that too only if you do something really stupid like unplugging the phone from computer while it is being rooted. Staying on stock ROM,thinking rooting will brick your phone is like staying in an isolated island and not getting in to the airplane as you’re afraid the plane airplane may crash! After rooting you’ll be able to remove the bloatwares from your phone. You can also change the kernel to one which supports under clocking.

Do a battery calibration
Your phone’s battery might have developed lazy effect aka memory effect due to wrong charging cycles. It makes your battery less efficient. Do a calibration with any app available in the market and make sure to wipe (root access needed) the battery status or else it’s useless.

I am Sachin Syam from Kerala, India. I am 18 years old. I will be finishing my school this year and will be joining college. My passion for mobile is something which can’t be said in a few words. I have a deep passion for mobile phones and it has given me a lot of popularity as a mobile phone enthusiast from my friends. But now my knowledge is limited and I want to explore more and more in rest of the life I have got. I always dreamt on bringing something new to this industry and I hope one day I will complete what I have in my mind.

The emerging era of mobile payments will eventually offer ubiquity, security and a seamless user experience to billions. But for now the reality remains a fragmented market of non-standardized and often difficult-to-use solutions.

One Size Fits Some

With certain mobile payment applications limited to literally single streets in single cities in the United States, it is difficult to exaggerate the fragmentation of today’s m-commerce market. Merchants suffer from “acceptance fatigue,” due to the increasing number of promising startups offering “the latest winning sales channel,” new business models and fancy but untried technology. Still, retailers find it difficult to turn down any new means of payment if there is a chance that doing so will result in the loss of even a single customer. They are also encouraged to say “yes” to new services that integrate payment with marketing and offer loyalty and couponing schemes which demand no upfront investment and bear only moderate commissions.

These retailers’ customers are likewise experiencing “gadget fatigue,” becoming lost in an overwhelming number of applications they have to download, register, activate and manage. One has to download, register and sign up for each NFC wallet, remote cloud payment, online checkout, remittance or loyalty service separately, not to mention the merchant applications of their favorite retailers. Similarly, single-purpose prepaid cards and other stored value accounts have begun to appear at a pace that leaves consumers confused and hesitant to reload them.

The mobile payment industry has too often promised its clientele immediate success. Yet due to the masses of new technologies with limited usability and the fragmented nature of the market, 80-90% of applications that are activated remain unused. And according to current international experience, only those applications that are used at least once a week tend to remain in use. Just think of all the fancy apps that you have downloaded, tried, and, in the absence of regular use, have deleted or left to molder at the bottom of your applications list. It’s no different from those web pages you used to register for, only to later forget not only your login details but the very reason you may have registered in the first place.

Why should anyone change their habits and invest time and effort trying to understand the new wave of payment technologies? We need to provide clear and tangible benefits, lower costs, better user experiences, and other real advantages if we are going to change this behavior. Only after we have made the rationale for adoption incontestable and offered a sense of passion and impulse, as well as a degree of trendiness, will we see wide acceptance.

The absence of uniform security standards presents yet another problem, as providers trumpet the security of their customers’ data without any external verification. Servers holding data on hundreds of millions of cards are regularly hacked, causing fear and outrage but no material change in customers’ behavior. The perceived trustworthiness of safe and secure solutions is threatened by the failure of a single unprotected application. While immaculate, fraud-free operation rarely makes headlines, abuses and leaking of card credentials and other sensitive information always will.

Cui Bono?

The industry is floundering between a Scylla and Charybdis of the monopolies’ disinterest and lack of new business models. Only clearly-aligned business interests could enforce co-operative business behavior. As long as legacy players insist on maintaining their existing but ailing revenue structures and new entrants are unable to break through due to market fragmentation, new business model will not be allowed to solidify.

SIM card manufacturers try to engineer customer lock-in by offering bundled services that prohibit third parties from providing independent over-the-air card management services. In the meantime, operators and handset manufacturers are reluctant to abandon their exclusive access to certain functionalities, aiming at expropriating their customers, although with only limited success. Each stakeholder attempts to become indispensable by gravitating towards the epicenter of the ecosystem.

In a global world, only players with global aspirations and a new attitude can be genuine agents of change. A free flow of innovative ideas and a critical mass of customer demand, coupled with the devoted ambitions of some blue chip companies and private equity funds, can build up a robust, new value chain.

Fishing in the Blue Ocean

Stakeholders in the market are trying to gain a foothold in this new arena either by will or desperation. Mobile operators have long tried to insist on a piece of this business simply because they have owned the SIM card, which they have perceived as a core ingredient of any secure transaction solution. But thanks to the rapid penetration of smartphones and secure server technologies, cloud payment providers long ago overcame the limitations of SIM card-based security solutions and introduced new, flexible telco-agnostic services. Meanwhile, the NFC-IP platform, alongside a new breed of contactless technologies, will make the SIM-card unnecessary for making NFC-transactions. As a result, mobile network operators will irreversibly become simple pipe suppliers for data traffic. And this is especially true for MNOs which fail to realize the time has come for them to switch to a business model based on their brand awareness and trustworthiness, access to their customers and go-to-market capability. The ones that are able to change their habits will develop private label value-added services, enter into partnerships with other stakeholders in the emerging ecosystem, issue proprietary m-wallets and start serving their consumers, including small- and medium-sized business clients, with this new technology, safeguarding their otherwise declining per-user revenues and lowering their churn rate.

Card scheme companies are running pilot programs, working cautiously on new standards and preparing themselves to intervene at the right time, before control slips out of their hands. They are making hundreds of billions of dollars following the old ways of doing business, so their reluctance to drive the change appears to be reasonable.

Banks have long been providing remote account management, wire transfer and ATM-locator services in the framework of mobile banking services. In most cases, such services have been a mere extension of e-banking for mobile devices. As a result of increased competition, and the fear that others may be eating their cake, financial institutions are ever keener on providing real mobile money, mobile payment and mobile commerce services, coupled with loyalty, personal finance and other convenience applications. Indeed, in some regions (Central-Eastern Europe) banks are driving the change, whereas in other parts of the world, telecom operators (Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia) or merchants (UK, US, Canada) are the first to taking up this new technology.

New, unexploited markets are available for all of these stakeholders. The biggest competitor to them is not another fancy technology, but the cash and obsolete legacy structures. The real business opportunity is not building new services to the detriment of others, but bringing “green-field transactions,” security and financial inclusion to those in need, and targeted ads, logistics, convenience, geo-location detection and ultra-sophisticated loyalty services to those who demand or ready to pay for the better services.

The Unstoppable Rise of Newbies

Even the United States, the largest consumer marketplace has only reached a “pilot phase” in terms of m-commerce adoption. The largest retailers are testing the waters, but the number of actual transactions is insignificant. Still, hundreds of start-ups are aiming for success employing different platform solutions or customer services, and following diverse business strategies aimed at disrupting outdated business models or “m-enabling” existing ones.

The biggest players – hardware manufacturers, software and IT services giants, and social network icons – have so far failed to control, or even set a clear direction for this market. They are buying up some new entrants, and partnering with others, but are still in waiting mode as to what big-ticket investments they should make or technology disruption they should commit themselves to. They behave like their predecessors did in the early 1990s, at the dawn of the Internet era.

“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses” – Henry Ford

So in what direction is all this going? This, unsurprisingly, is rather difficult to predict. In my belief, we have to work relentlessly on a new breed of mobile commerce solutions that offers ubiquitous access, full functionality in remote as well as proximity payment situations, and a user experience that matches the friendliness and easiness of the latest smartphone operation systems and social networks, and which pursues a zero tolerance policy vis-à-vis security measures.

In this new world of mobile transaction solutions, a ubiquitous m-commerce option becomes a public utility similar to voice services now universally available around the world. Alongside the necessity of a permissive regulation in each country and interoperability between dominant solutions, this innovation will help merchants get closer to their clients by releasing e-commerce from the “custody” of the Internet, and assist the poor in getting access to markets and financial services that they have been so unjustly lacking so far. All payment instruments, access methods and usage cases will merge into useful, secure and user-friendly applications combined with the unparalleled functionalities of the remote access devices. Trusted service providers, the new agents of this cultural change, will compete for customers with perpetual innovation that demolishes the monopolies of the past.

In the meantime, new if not revolutionary forms of payment instruments must emerge to meet the needs of billions of as-yet unserved customers. Stored value accounts will level the marketplace – digital money, such as Bitcoin and its followers, alongside increasingly successful m-wallets in emerging regions, will serve not only the unbanked, but also the mobile-savvy in the industrialized world. Transactions and settlement will become real-time, costs will drop sharply, acceptance networks will expand and payment systems will interoperate as a result of the newly created ecosystem.

This game-changing technology will force disintermediation of any unnecessary elements in the value chain, and generate a new attitude on the part of legacy players. As real money virtualizes, mobile devices – now handsets, later glasses and other, as yet unimaginable instruments – will become the dominant payment interfaces, helping the world getting rid of the costs and hurdles of the monetary instruments of the previous centuries.

Co-founder of NanoSatisfi, a nanosatellite startup capturing the imagination of educators and hackers alike, Joel Spark wants to bring the improved access we have to computing to space. “We want to give people more access to space. And when you focus on high school and college students, offering heavy access to technology increases interest and retention.”

At the end of April the world’s first individual workout app “Street Workout Squats” was launched for the iPhone. The developers promise an app “that guides you with the voice of your own virtual personal trainer while you pump up your volume”. So what Jane Fonda did to the 80s with the aerobic craze, could very soon happen with “Street Workout Squats”, when people start performing the app’s excercise routines on bus stops or while boarding a plane. The developers are doing everything to make the Street Workout movement into the new “Gagnam Style” and are staging the third annual World Street Workout Championship in Riga, Latvia on August, 3rd. Events in Germany, Russia, Spain, Ukraine and the US are ready to launch this year, too.

Easy and on-the-go
Accessing the phone’s built-in accelerometer, Street Workout Squats automatically keeps track of reps, sets and other
workout data hands-free as the phone stays in your sweatpants’ or shorts’ pocket during the entire workout. User just need to cinch in
their earbuds and listen up while the virtual personal trainer motivates them throughout theentire squat workout routine. A countdown timer tracks the recovery time between sets, so there’s no more need to keep checking the clock! The Street Workout Squats app also includes several easy-to-follow daily training routines in three levels of difficulty and claims that, if followed, within two months the user will be able to perform 200 calisthenic squats in a single routine.

Your new personal trainer
Future updates to the app are already in development and will expand Street Workout Squats into the next-generation iPhone fitness app that will automatically recognize, keep track of and train for a wide array of bodyweight calisthenicsbased exercises such as Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, Dips – and many others – routines that numerous professional personal trainers recommend as the most rigorous, effective and time-efficient workout methods available – without requiring any expensive equipment or gym membership. Street Workout Squats was created by Ukrainian co-developers Nikolay Pavlov and Sergey Shiyan, founders of Biomech, Inc. based in Campbell, California.

The “StreetOwl” mobile app, developed by the American company of the same name, enables drivers to match their car insurance to the way they drive and save themselves some money. First of all, the app gives drivers some feedback on their current driving style and measures the risk factors. For every drive, the latest figures are recorded, a score is calculated and suggestions for improvements are made. As soon as drivers reach their targets, they can use the app to find the right and potentially most cost-effective insurance policies.

Monterey, CA, 05/02/2012 – MLOVE ConFestival USA gathered a passionate group of mobile insiders – from app developers and enterprises to NGO foundations.

MLOVE ConFestival featured inspiring speakers and topics from Internet of Things, wearables, connected cars, brands & mobility, maker movement and transmedia. The inspiring event thrives on open innovation and intense networking. Participants from across the US, Canada, and Europe convened in Monterey, CA to share optimism and opportunities about the future of Mobile.

Jerome Nadel, CMO of Rambus Inc., opened the MLOVE ConFestival with Rambus CTO Dr. Martin Scott sharing new opportunities for invention in the Internet of Things. Jerome stated:

“The MLOVE initiative and events are symbolic of the true spirit of invention, bringing together the creativity, drive, and expertise of both entrepreneurial start-ups and established market leaders in a dynamic, yet intimate, environment.
The result is a collective brilliance of thought leaders and innovators, all centered on the single concept of mobility as a catalyst for change and opportunity. Rambus is pleased to participate in and be a sponsor of the MLOVE 2013 ConFestivals.”

Speakers & Themes

Other speakers represented Mercedes-Benz, AT&T, Edelmann,Samsung, Atmel, frog design and Microsoft. A special highlight was the Bentley concept car on display by QNX Software Systems. Together with a smart electric drive and a smart car2go rideshare vehicle from Austin Texas, the automobiles sparked discussions about mobility of the future and connected cars.

Exclusive for the MLOVE audience, Nanosatisfi made available one week of free computing time as a result of a design-thinking workshop called “Future Cube”. Their kickstarter-funded ArduSat satellite is powered by open source Arduino hardware designed around an Atmel chip.
Speakers included Maurice Conti, Head of Innovation at Autodesk, and Brad Templeton, consultant to the Google self-driving car – both faculty members of Singularity University of Mountain View, CA.

Startup Competition; Themes

The following startups presented at the startup competition and won prizes by AT&T, Samsung, Nike and American Airlines through a partnership with Tech Wildcatters:

• Securepress ID, CEO Paul Johnson
• Share2you, CEO Brett Bauer
• Twyxt, co-founder Roman Weishäupl
• StyLend, CEO Lona Alia Duncan

The judging was led by Gabriella Draney, founder of accelerator Tech Wildcatters (Dallas) and joined by venture partners from NEA and Draper Associates, the managing editor of Venture Beat, plus speakers from AT&T and Samsung.

Soul

MLOVE has a special touch on bringing humanity and soul to its events and growing tribe. At Monterey, touch software specialist Artrage presented artist Bo Paweena, who drew exclusive live portraits of the speakers. Together with videos of the talks, the portraits are made available at www.mlove.com.

Director and producer Steve Brown opened MLOVE USA with a sneak peak of the Burning Man documentary “Spark” and discussed his journey from app developer to film maker. He set the right course for the MLOVE ConFestival by revealing a spirit of participation, activism and passion. “We do not have to wait until Burning Man, we are at MLOVE now,” noted Urvi Bhandari, Global Innovation Director of AT&T.

Participants

The MLOVE crowd was well balanced between Silicon Valley insiders and inspiring personalities from Europe. It is a must for MLOVE to combine thought leaders from various industries, continents, backgrounds, and cultures. This is the perfect setting to generate cross-pollination of ideas, which benefit every attendee – on a business or personal level.
“We are very proud about the second edition of MLOVE in the US and to continue our success story so close to Silicon Valley and the hottest innovation hub world wide. This would not have been possible without the dedication of our MLOVE team and these amazing speakers. I am also very thankful for the ongoing engagement of our sponsors and partners,” said Harald Neidhardt, MLOVE founder & curator.

The next MLOVE ConFestival Europe near Berlin is opening June 19-21, 2013.

Whether we like it or not, the world around us has become obsessed with sharing every moment with everyone. Entire lives are documented to the minute and shared on every platform possible: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. But, how much of it is really relevant to us? How much of this do we want to see? What are the ramifications of such oversharing?

Avoid oversharing

Every time I go on Facebook I feel like I’m searching for a familiar face in an unfamiliar crowd. I have to sift through my neighbor’s pictures of his kids at the beach, my colleague’s drunken pictures from his latest vacation, and the endless “happy family” photos posted by my old high school girlfriend that I haven’t spoken to in years. All this and I still end up missing the picture posted by my sister of her kid’s dance recital- the one picture I actually WANTED to see. Furthermore, all this oversharing can actually get people in trouble. Imagine the countless job opportunities people have missed out on because the HR manager was clever enough to look up her leads on Facebook. Or the number of people fired for badmouthing their company on social media or posting inappropriate pictures on their profiles.

Thinking of kids…

And last but not least, we allow ourselves to post and share about others, but what if they don’t want us to? I know Facebook allows you to review posts before they appear on your page, but what about those who don’t have profiles yet? I’m talking about our kids. My daughters are almost at the age of being socially conscious and when they open their first Facebook page I can tell you right now, they will be extremely embarrassed to find their baby pictures all over the web. I’m not saying that being a part of the public world is bad. I just think it shouldn’t be a total submission; Take the good and lose the bad. Enjoy the timely, communal aspect of the public world, but use it wisely. Sift through the information mayhem and share what is relevant and appropriate.

My solution

I recently launched Familio.com which tries to provide a solution. It is a private and easy photo and video sharing platform for families and it is built to be user friendly for all family members, old and young. Both the mobile and web application are easy enough for my parents to figure out, while also being engaging and updated enough to keep the younger generation interested. It keeps my family connected and updated on ALL family moments by providing notifications when something new comes up. And the best part is – it’s private. I choose who will be part of my Familio and be able to view my moments. So it’s not that problematic to share privately via mobile in the public world- you just have to do it right. For example, this blog post from MLOVE will go on Facebook, but my baby’s picture in the bath will be for my family’s eyes only.

How many photos a week do you see on social Platforms that make you think ‘I wish these were shared privately’?

I bet most of you wished if your phone/tablet had Windows Mobile when you saw those tiles and its sleekly interface for the first time. Well, I did But it is so good to be true! All I could do was to get a skin/theme which mimics the user interface of the Windows! One can’t simply put another Operating System (OS) in their phone or tablet as their components are optimized to run a particular OS. A phone that runs on Android has its own complete set of hardware pattern, like the sensors and keys which is completely different from that of an iPhone or a Windows device.

When’ll multi Operating Systems come into existence?

The answer for that question is simple. It have already happened and most of you are still unaware of it. Yes, you heard it right. The first bang was made by Linux. Linux Ubuntu mobile was recently released and it supported android devices with dual core CPUs. One can simply flash Ubuntu Mobile just like a custom ROM with a suitable kernel. We all know that android is built on Linux kernel. So basically the core is the same. You won’t believe if I say Ubuntu Mobile was built on CyanogenMod! Linux mobile use more resources than android does, but still all the high ends and med ends can run it.

Firefox wants to change the world again

Firefox OS is another Linux-based open source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers being developed by Mozilla. It is designed to allow HTML5 applications to communicate directly with the device’s hardware using JavaScript. The catch is that it can be even run on an entry level android compatible devices as the hardware requirements are pretty low compared to Ubuntu mobile. It’s another spark that will light the multi OS war.
But we are still so far from that day where you’ll be able to keep Windows and Android in the same phone and can boot in to the one of your choice. It’ll give the users complete freedom to choose what they really want. Some may like the hardware of Galaxy S4, but may not like android as they have to keep their device as secure as possible.

Without changing the phone, they can just put on another OS which is more secure. If you do a little research you’ll come to know that most Windows and Android devices of same class share similar hardware, like CPU and GPU. So I believe, optimizing phones for different Operating Systems won’t be much of a job! Whatsoever it is up to the manufacturers to decide. Either to chain their users on to a particular OS or to leave it to users to choose what to use!
